Happy birthday, dear Jose

I've marched on to my birthday with the penguins:

"(...) In some ways this is a story of survival. A tale of life over death. But it's more than that, really. This is a story about love."
(March of the Penguins, Luc Jacquet)

"By May the light will nearly have disappeared from the sky and the temperature continues to drop. And for those who began their march too late or have fallen behind because of weakness or hunger, hope of survival is now remote. The lone penguin has no chance against the winter's cold. He will simply fade away absorbed by the great whiteness all around him."

Like life, the movie has plenty of sweet and poignant moments. The sweetest is when the chicks take their first steps. The most poignant... it's hard to choose one. I've learnt penguins have to follow social conventions to the letter, any eccentricity leading to their own death or that of their chicks. Luckily, people can be themselves, make their own choices without consequences (to a certain extent), although there are some who would rather live life like penguins.
